First-time guide 3 of 7

Share your first memory: posts, photos and who sees them

This is the part that makes Kunbaa different from a camera roll: you write down what a photo is while you post it, and on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra you choose who sees it. Start with one photo you actually care about.

Step 1: Open the wall and start a post

  1. Tap the Wall tab at the bottom of the app. The wall is where the family’s everyday life and its keepsakes sit side by side.
  2. Tap the round + button beside the bottom bar (New post). The Create post screen opens.

Step 2: Add the photo and write the names

  1. Tap Media and choose one or more photos, or a video, from your phone. They show as big previews straight away and upload in the background while you keep writing.
  2. Write who is in the photo, where it was taken and roughly when. That note travels with the photo, so a grandchild opening it in forty years still knows.

Step 3: Choose who sees it (Kunbaa Plus and Ultra)

Above the text is Share radius, with four choices. The widest is first, and each one after it is narrower.

  • Everyone: every member of your family space. This is the default.
  • Extended family: also grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
  • Household: parents, partner and children only.
  • Only me: only you can see it. You pick it for each post; it is never your default.

Kunbaa reads those circles off the family tree, and applies your choice on its servers, everywhere the post can appear: the wall, the Library, comments, reactions, on the phone and the website alike. A relative outside the circle never receives it. Whichever you choose, a post is shared only with your family space.

Choosing who sees a post is part of Kunbaa Plus and Ultra. On the free plan a post goes to everyone in your family space, and a post you already shared keeps the audience you chose for it, though on the free plan you can no longer change it.

Step 4: Post

Tap Post. A post with a photo or video in it is badged a memory drop. The people who can see it get it on their wall; if you narrowed it, they see a small Household or Extended family badge on it.

Changing who sees it later

Only the author can change a post’s audience. On your own post, tap the audience shown on it to open Who can see this, pick another and save. If you make it narrower, people outside the new circle stop seeing it at once, though anyone who already saved or downloaded it may still have it. If you make it wider, more people can see it from then on, and nobody is notified.

Where it lives afterwards

  • Moments, the first pill at the top of the wall, gathers every memory drop day by day so the things worth keeping do not scroll away under the things worth a smile. Posts beside it is the full conversation.
  • Albums, the pill beside Posts, opens the family’s albums and the library of every photo and video posted, month by month. It is the same archive without the conversation around it, and it follows the same audience rule.

Reacting and commenting

Tap the thumbs-up to react, or the speech bubble to comment. Comments are where the stories come out (“that’s the house on Barrack Street”), so leave them on. A relative who is being unkind can be muted from their profile; you stop seeing their posts, and they are not told.

A tip

Start with twenty photos you actually care about; test photos make the whole thing feel pointless. Most of your family will mostly look, and that is fine. A family space needs three or four people adding things and everyone else receiving.

Questions families ask

Who sees a post if I don't choose?

Everyone in your family space: the people who accepted an invite from your family, and never anyone outside it. With Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, narrowing is a choice you make on each post.

Can I change the audience after posting?

On Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, yes, if you wrote the post. Tap the audience shown on your own post, pick another and save. Making it narrower takes effect at once, though anyone who already saved or downloaded it may still have it. Making it wider is silent: nobody is notified. Only the author can change a post's audience.

Who is in my household and my extended family?

Household is your parents, your partner and your children, as recorded on the tree. Extended family adds grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews and grandchildren, with their partners, two generations up and two down. If someone you expect is missing, the fix is on the tree: check they are linked to the right parents.

Are my photos compressed?

Lightly. Very large photos are resized so they upload quickly on an ordinary connection and are kept at a size that prints well. On an iPhone, videos you add to the wall are kept at up to 720p on the free plan and up to 1080p on Kunbaa Plus and Kunbaa Ultra.

How much can we store?

Each family shares one archive, with 5 GB of room on the free plan, 100 GB on Kunbaa Plus and 500 GB on Kunbaa Ultra. The usage page under Settings has a live meter for the family's shared space.

Does this work on the website?

Yes. The post box on the website's wall has the same choices on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, and a post made in one place is seen by the same people in the other.
