Choosing who sees a post
Everything on the wall is private to your family. Some things are for a smaller circle still: the scan results, the first day at school, the argument about the kitchen. Pick the circle when you post.
The four audiences
When you write a post, the Share radius picker lets you choose who receives it. The default is the widest, and each choice after it is narrower. As you choose, the post box counts the relatives in that radius who have a Kunbaa account, on the website and in the app. See Share radius.
Choosing who sees a post comes with Kunbaa Plus and Ultra. Posts already set to Only me stay private.
- Everyone: every member of your family space. This is how every post has always worked, and it is still the default.
- Extended family: your household plus grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, nieces and nephews, first cousins and grandchildren, with the partners of each. Two generations up and two down from you.
- Household: your parents, your partner and your children only. Nobody else, however close.
- Only me: only you. It is picked for each post and is never your default.
Changing it after you post
Only the author can change a post’s audience. On your own post, tap the audience shown on it, pick another and save. If you make it narrower, people outside the new circle stop seeing it at once, though anyone who already saved or downloaded it may still have it. If you make it wider, more people can see it from then on, and nobody is notified.
Where the circles come from
Kunbaa reads the audience off the family tree. Your Household is whoever the tree records as your parents, partner and children; Extended family walks two parent links up from you, then two child links down from everyone it reached, and adds their partners. Partners are the edge of the circle: your partner is inside, your partner’s parents are outside, and that side of the family sees a post when you choose Everyone, or when someone on that side posts.
Because it is read from the tree, it stays right as the tree grows. A cousin added next month sees your Extended family posts from the day she is linked. If someone you expected is missing, the fix is on the tree, not on the post: check that they are linked to the right parents.
How it is enforced
The rule is applied on our servers, not by the app hiding things. The wall, the feed, the media library, comments, reactions and mentions all follow it, so a relative outside the circle never receives the post, its photos or its comments, on the phone or on the website. People inside the circle see a small Household or Extended family badge on the post; people outside it are told nothing. A post set to Only me is seen by nobody else at all.
Choosing it on the website
The post box on the web dashboard has the same four choices. The audience you pick in one place is the audience in every place.
Questions families ask
Can I choose who sees a post on the free plan?
Choosing who sees a post comes with Kunbaa Plus and Ultra. Posts already set to Only me stay private.
What is the default?
Everyone: the whole family space, exactly as posts always worked. Narrowing is a choice you make on each post; nothing changes for the posts you have already shared.
What does Only me do?
Only you can see the post. You pick it for each post and it is never your default, so a post goes to Only me only when you choose it. You can widen it later if you change your mind.
Who is in my Household?
Your parents, your partner (or partners) and your children, as recorded on the family tree (the people in your house, or the ones who once were). Siblings, grandparents and in-laws are not in it; on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, choose Extended family for them.
Who is in my Extended family?
Your Household plus grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, nieces and nephews, first cousins, grandchildren, and the partners of all of them. It reaches two generations up and two down from you. Your partner's own parents and siblings are outside it. That side of the family sees your post when you choose Everyone.
Where does Kunbaa get that from?
From the tree. The audience is worked out from the relationships recorded on the family tree at the moment someone opens the wall, so if a cousin is added to the tree later, they see your Extended family posts from then on. If someone is missing from where you expect, check they are linked on the tree.
Can people outside the audience find the post another way?
No. The wall, the feed, the media library, comments, reactions and mentions all follow the same rule, and it is applied on our servers rather than in the app. Someone outside the audience simply never receives the post.
Do the people I chose know it was narrowed?
The post carries a small Household or Extended family badge for the people who can see it. Nobody outside the audience is told a post exists.
Can I change the audience after posting?
Yes, if you wrote the post. Tap the audience shown on your own post, pick another and save. Making it narrower takes effect at once, though anyone who already saved or downloaded it may still have it. Making it wider is silent: nobody is notified. Only the author can change a post's audience.
Does this work on the website too?
Yes. The website's post box has the same choices, and posts narrowed in the app show to the same people on the web.
