Draw It Alone or Build It Together? Kunbaa vs Family Tree: Our Heritage

Kunbaa is for families who want the tree to be everyone's: your side, their side, each relative adding the branch only they know, with the photos, birthdays and stories kept beside the people they belong to, and nobody paying by the week to keep it.

  • Everyone in the family joins free
  • Invite-only
  • Nobody's data sold

One phone can draw a tree, by the week. It takes the family to fill one in, and they join free.

Quick answer

Family Tree: Our Heritage is a tree-drawing app for one phone: you start from yourself, add ancestors, attach photos and dates, and can print a high-resolution chart, with premium sold as a weekly subscription. Kunbaa is a private, invite-only family space where every relative builds the same tree together for free, with a wall for photos and stories that keep their names, events with birthday reminders, and chat and calls in the app. Kunbaa does not print charts; Our Heritage does not let the family in.

Who is Kunbaa for?

Drawing the family tree for the first time

You have opened a tree app, typed in your parents and grandparents, and stalled at the cousins. On Kunbaa that is the moment you invite an aunt: she adds her branch, her children add theirs, and the tree fills in from every side, each person with a photo and a birthday, free, with no drawing to do.

Family historians

A printed chart is a snapshot; the family keeps changing. Kunbaa keeps the tree alive: a new baby goes on the day she arrives, a relative who passes is marked and remembered, and the scanned albums and the stories sit beside the people they are about, where the whole family can find them.

Families spread across countries

The tree is only complete when the relatives in Auckland, Leeds and Ludhiana add what they know. Each of them joins free, adds their side, and gets the birthdays off the tree, and the reunion photos land beside the people in them, whatever time zone they wake up in.

What you keep, and what you give up

Family Tree: Our Heritage is good at its job. This is the plain list of what changes if your family moves this part of its life to Kunbaa.

What you keep

  • Our Heritage, if you want a printed chart. Draw it there from the tree the family built on Kunbaa.
  • A private tree shared only with your family, which every invited relative can build.
  • Photos and stories with the names written down, beside the people on the tree.
  • Birthdays from the tree, events with reminders, and chat and calls between relatives.
  • One subscription for the payer's household, up to 20 accounts; everyone else joins free.

What you give up

  • High-resolution printing and poster charts. Kunbaa does not print.
  • A duplicate finder and an ancestry map.
  • Working on the tree with no relatives involved. Kunbaa is built for the family to join in.
  • A one-device app that needs no invitations to be useful.

What Kunbaa does, in detail

01

A tree the whole family builds

Everyone you invite gets their own place on the tree, their photo and their birthday, and adds the relatives only they know. Both sides of the family, each relative adding their own. An invitation links each relative to the place you already made for them, so nothing is typed twice.

02

Photos and stories that keep their names

A tree app attaches a photo to a card. Kunbaa puts it on the family wall with who, where and roughly when in the caption, beside the person on the tree, and, on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, lets you choose who sees it: everyone in the family, the extended family, or just your household. Moments gathers the archive into a timeline.

03

Birthdays come off the tree

Every birthday on the tree becomes a reminder for the family. Plan the reunion as an event with a to-do list, keep it to the relatives it concerns, and attach the photos afterwards so the day is kept as a day.

Events and reminders →

04

Bring a tree file in

If you have already built a tree elsewhere and can export a GEDCOM file, import it on kunbaa.com: Kunbaa matches it against the people already on your tree and writes nothing until you confirm. GEDCOM export is not switched on in this release.

05

Who can edit the tree

An admin decides, per relative, whether they can add people to the tree, post to the wall, or message members, and a relative can request more access from inside the app. Every account is held by an adult, so the tree stays in the hands of the people you invited.

Kunbaa vs Family Tree: Our Heritage: your questions

More questions? Read the full FAQ or what private means in Kunbaa.

Is Kunbaa an alternative to Family Tree: Our Heritage?

For building a family tree with your relatives, yes: on Kunbaa everyone you invite adds their own branch, photo and birthday to one private tree, free. For drawing and printing a chart on your own phone it is not. Kunbaa does not print, and Our Heritage is built for exactly that.

Can my relatives edit the tree on Kunbaa?

Yes. That is the design. Every relative you invite joins free and adds the people only they know, and an admin sets per-member permissions for adding to the tree, posting and messaging. Only the family you invited can see or change it.

Does Kunbaa charge weekly?

No. Everyone in the family joins Kunbaa free, and the tree has no limit on people. The paid plans start with Kunbaa Plus at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month for the payer's household, paid by one person and covering their household. Kunbaa Ultra adds more room, on kunbaa.com. Our Heritage lists its premium as a weekly subscription on the App Store.

Can I print my Kunbaa family tree?

Not in this release. Kunbaa is a living tree on screens, built for the family to keep adding to. If you want a wall chart, a tree-printing app or a print shop will do that job better.

Can I move my tree from another app into Kunbaa?

If the other app exports a GEDCOM file, yes: import it on kunbaa.com in a browser, and Kunbaa matches it against the people already on your tree and writes nothing until you confirm. Photos and stories are added on the wall afterwards. Kunbaa cannot yet write a GEDCOM back out.

Can children be on a Kunbaa tree?

Yes. Children are added to the tree by an adult and appear in the photos; they do not hold an account, because every Kunbaa account is for adults aged 18 and over. Adults keep it; kids are in it.

Everyone belongs on the tree. Start with the people you know.

Put your parents, your siblings and the cousins on a private tree, invite them to add their side, and let the photos and stories gather beside the people they belong to.
Everyone in the family joins free. When you want room for the whole archive, one person takes Kunbaa Plus at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month for the payer's household.
