Kunbaa vs Facebook: Everyone You Have Ever Met, or Just the Family
Kunbaa is for families who want the reunion photos, the birthdays and the news about Grandad to reach the relatives, and only the relatives, in a private space with no ranked feed, nobody's data sold and a real family tree underneath.
- Everyone in the family joins free
- Invite-only
- Nobody's data sold

Quick answer
Facebook connects you with everyone (friends, colleagues, school groups, Pages) and its reach is its strength. Kunbaa is a private, invite-only space for one family: no public profiles, no algorithm, a family tree with everyone's birthday on it, and a wall where, on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, each post reaches the audience you choose. Keep Facebook for the wide circle; use Kunbaa for the close one.

What you keep, and what you give up
Facebook is good at its job. This is the plain list of what changes if your family moves this part of its life to Kunbaa.
What you keep
- Facebook itself. Most families keep it for the wide circle and use Kunbaa for the close one.
- A private space with no public profiles, no ranked feed and nobody's data sold.
- On Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, a per-post audience (everyone, extended family, or just your household) that the server enforces.
- A real family tree that relatives build together, with birthdays on it.
- Permissions an admin sets per member: who can post, add to the tree, or message.
What you give up
- Reach. Everyone is already on Facebook; relatives have to accept an invitation to join Kunbaa.
- The wider circle. There are no friends of friends, Pages, Marketplace or public groups in Kunbaa.
- End-to-end encrypted messaging. Personal Messenger chats are end-to-end encrypted by default; Kunbaa chat is not.
- Accounts for teenagers. Kunbaa accounts are 18+; teens are on the tree, added by a parent.
- Chat on a computer. Kunbaa chat and calls are in the mobile app; the tree, the wall and events also work on the web.
What Kunbaa does, in detail
A tree, not a friends list
Facebook lets you list a relative on your About page. Kunbaa puts every relative on a tree, with their photo, their birthday and how they connect to you. Everyone you invite adds their own side, and a child added by an adult is on the tree without holding an account.
The Kunbaa family tree →
A wall with an audience for every post
Photos, videos, stories and voice notes go on the wall in the order they were shared, captioned with who, where and roughly when. Each post reaches everyone in the family or, on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, the audience you choose (the extended family or just your household) and Moments gathers the archive into a timeline the family can scroll back through.
The wall and Moments →
Birthdays and gatherings the family can plan
Birthdays come from the tree, so the reminder arrives whether or not anyone posted. Plan the reunion as an event with a to-do list and reminders, keep it to the relatives it concerns, and attach the photos afterwards so the day is kept as a day.
Events and reminders →
Chat and calls between relatives only
Only the people in your family space can message or ring you, so there are no message requests from strangers. Calls start from a relative's page on the tree: voice and video one-to-one, and group calls of up to 6 people including you on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, which anyone in the family can join. Chat and calls are in the Kunbaa app.
Chat and calls in Kunbaa →
Permissions an admin sets, per relative
A private Facebook group has admins; so does a Kunbaa family, with finer controls. An admin decides for each member whether they can post to the wall, add people to the tree, or message members, and a relative can request more access from inside the app. Every account is held by an adult.
How private is Kunbaa? →Kunbaa vs Facebook: your questions
More questions? Read the full FAQ or what private means in Kunbaa.
What is a private alternative to Facebook for family?
A space built for one family instead of everyone. Kunbaa is invite-only, has no public profiles and no ranked feed, and shows your family's wall in the order things were shared. At its centre is a real family tree, and on Kunbaa Plus and Ultra each post reaches the audience you choose inside the family.
Should we leave Facebook for Kunbaa?
You do not have to. Facebook's reach is real: the second cousins and the school friends are all there, and it is free. Most families keep Facebook for the wide circle and use Kunbaa for the close one: the tree, the photos worth keeping, the birthdays and the plans.
Is a private Facebook group enough for family?
For some families it is. In a private group only members see the posts. But it still lives inside Facebook: every member's name and profile picture are public, the group sits inside an ad-funded feed that decides what each member sees, and there is no family tree. Kunbaa is private from the ground up and built around the tree.
Does Kunbaa have ads or an algorithm?
Kunbaa Plus and Ultra have no ads. The free plan has none today, and any ads on it would not be personalised. Nobody's data is sold, and Kunbaa's revenue comes from its paid plans. There is no algorithm either: the wall shows what your relatives shared in the order they shared it, and nothing is ranked to keep you scrolling.
Can I choose who in the family sees a post?
On Kunbaa Plus and Ultra, yes: each post goes to everyone in the family, the extended family, or just your household (your parents, partner and children), the default is everyone, and you can change it post by post, which the server enforces. On Free, every post goes to everyone in the family.
Is Kunbaa more secure than Facebook Messenger?
Not in the encryption sense. Personal Messenger chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default, and Kunbaa is not end-to-end encrypted. Private in Kunbaa means invite-only, nobody's data sold, and everything shared only with your family space.
Can I use Kunbaa chat and calls today?
Yes. Chat and calls are in the Kunbaa mobile app, and the family tree, the wall and events also work on kunbaa.com, free.
What does Kunbaa cost compared with Facebook?
Facebook is free with ads. Everyone in your family joins Kunbaa free. The tree, the wall, chat, calls, events and Family Safety cost nothing. One person pays for Kunbaa Plus at $9.99/mo or $99.99/yr (17% less, about $8.33 a month for the payer's household yearly), on kunbaa.com or in the app, which keeps longer videos, room for the whole family's archive and chat photos while the family is on Plus. Accounts are for adults, 18 and up.
